Enjoy the charm of Royal Kensington on a tour of one of London’s most prestigious neighborhoods. A key stop is Kensington Palace, a grand royal residence with over 300 years of history. It was originally a modest Jacobean mansion. It was later transformed into a royal palace under William III and Mary II, who expanded it to suit their tastes. Queen Victoria was born and raised here, and in more recent times, it was the official residence of Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince William, and Prince Harry. It still serves as a royal home today for members of the royal family, like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. As you explore the palace grounds and surrounding area, your guide will share fascinating stories about royal life, secret traditions and scandals, and how this iconic residence evolved over time.

Behind palace walls
While living in Kensington Palace, Princess Victoria had to follow a strict set of rules. These rules were known as the Kensington System. The system was designed by her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and advisor Sir John Conroy. Its purpose was to control every part of Victoria’s life. She was not allowed to be alone at any time, not even in her room. She had to sleep in her mother’s bedroom until she became queen. She was not allowed to choose her friends freely. She even needed someone to hold her hand while descending the stairs.
The idea behind the system was to keep her dependent and to control the future queen. However, the system backfired. When Victoria became queen in 1837, she moved out of the palace immediately and cut ties with Conroy. The system is now seen as a failed attempt to manipulate royal power.
