Great guide

We learned lots of interesting information from our guide, which made the visit so much better! He taught us about the history of Buckingham Palace and what the royal family does there today, like events and dinners. Watching the changing of the guard was cool, too. It was a good way to take in British culture while in London.

Beautiful palace

Buckingham Palace is amazing to visit! It was great to witness all the extravagance of the royals and past styles. Everything inside is so opulent. It was also nice to see the art collection. Our guide found a great spot for us to watch the guards change. We learned a lot on the tour, so I definitely recommend this!

WALK THROUGH THE STATE ROOMS

Enter the State Rooms to see where the British royal family entertain guests. One of them is the Throne Room, with two throne chairs. What is it used for? Well, ceremonies and other official events. The two throne chairs were made for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation ceremony in 1953. They were also used for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had their wedding photos taken here, too. Next is the ballroom, where you will feel like a royal as you walk around. Afterward, continue to the White Drawing Room, where the royal family meets before official events. The State Rooms are richly decorated, mostly because of George IV. The king had the palace redesigned and made it into a grand palace in the 19th century. The rooms feature great works of art, such as a painting by Van Dyck and sculptures by Canova. You can also see fine Sèvres porcelain and luxurious English and French furniture. Traditionally, Buckingham Palace was not open to the public. The State Rooms were opened in the 1990s. The purpose was to gather money for the repairs to Windsor Castle, which was damaged by a fire.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Together with your live guide, watch the Changing of the Guard. Learn about its history and meaning. It is the handover of duties between two groups of guards, and its actual name is Guard Mounting. The King's Guard will march, accompanied by the military band's sounds.

How did Buckingham Palace get its name?

Buckingham Palace was named after John Sheffield, the Duke of Buckingham. There was a big house at the location of Buckingham Palace, and it was given to the duke in 1698. He did not like the house as he thought it was old-fashioned. He ordered a new house to be built, called the Buckingham House. When George IV became king, he had the house turned into a palace. The architect was later dismissed for spending too much on the palace's construction.
