Westminster Abbey Working Hours

Opening times

Monday – Saturday: from 9.30 AM – 3.30 PM (last entry)

Westminster Abbey is open for most days, but it is also a living working church, so please keep in mind that some areas could be closed for visitors during the worship ceremonies. Although, if you would like, you can attend the ceremony.

What will you see inside Westminster Abbey?

The Coronation Chair

The Coronation Chair is a wooden chair adorned that was commissioned by King Edward I to hold the mysterious sandstone Stone of Scone. The chair has been used in coronation ceremonies since 1308. The Coronation Chair is a very popular tourist attraction and has graffiti carved into the back by Westminster schoolboys and visitors from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Poets’ Corner

Poets’ Corner is a section of Westminster Abbey that pays tribute to the many famous poets and writers who are buried there. Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of The Canterbury Tales, was the first poet to be interred in Poets’ Corner. Writers such as Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, and Alfred Tennyson are also buried there, while others like Jane Austen, Emily Brontë, and Lewis Carroll are memorialized. The most recent poet to be honored in Poets’ Corner was Philip Larkin in 2016.

Westminster Abbey Burials

During your visit to Westminster Abbey, you will also discover its historic burial grounds, where many royalties, politicians, and other influential individuals have been laid to rest. Some of the most famous figures buried there are Queen Elizabeth I, Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens, and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Visiting Westminster Abbey is a must!

Westminster Abbey is so beautiful! So much history inside to explore. We suggest spending at least two hours if you want to get in-depth insight and have enough time to read all the tombstones and look around. Also, take an audio guide when entering the site. It helped us fully understand the abbey's history and what we were seeing. For me, the last Chapel was the most beautiful part of the visit - so beautiful with such intricate detail. Definitely worth visiting!

Save your time & money with this ticket!

We had an amazing time at Westminster Abbey. There was a lot of crowding inside the abbey, perhaps because we went at the wrong time. Maybe early morning is better. However, we'll be going back because it is simply magnificent!
